Waiting for water to warm up can be a serious inconvenience. Depending on how far the water heater is from the tap, you may waste several minutes and large quantities of water waiting for hot water. A hot water recirculating system can solve this problem. It is important to weigh the options, pros and cons when considering a hot water recirculating system in NYC.
System Options
Homeowners currently have three main options for hot water recirculating systems. A traditional system uses a dedicated return line to carry hot water from the farthest fixture back to the heater. This creates a constant loop that keeps hot water available at all times. An on-demand system heats water at the push of a button, either through a return line or an under-the-sink pump. This type of system only produces hot water when needed. Instant hot water recirculating systems may be installed under the sink or over the water heater, and do not require a return line.
Things to Consider
Hot water circulating systems have a lot of perks. Having instant access to hot water saves time, and keeps gallons of precious water from going down the drain. This is especially important when water supplies are low. It can also lower your water bill, which is a big help for many households.
Like all plumbing apparatuses, water recirculating systems have some drawbacks. They can increase household energy usage if allowed to run constantly. Using an on-demand system or installing timers and temperature sensors can help. They are also prone to corrosion, and can be noisy if air gets in the line. Ask a plumbing expert for ways to mitigate those problems.
A hot water recirculating system can be a great asset for your building or household. Explore this option for added convenience and preservation of critical water sources.
