Modern dollhouses by top architects

Let’s marvel a little more at these beautiful dollhouses created by British architects, miniatures that found their lucky owners this November. UK based developer Cathedral Group enlisted 20 top architecture firms who, alongside talented artists and designers, created contemporary takes on a childhood favorite - the dollhouse. The creations were auctioned on November 11 and the profit raised, close to £90,000 was donated to KIDS, a charity that supports disabled children and young people.

The highest bid was obtained for the futuristic dollhouse from Zaha Hadid Architects, a puzzle-like mini habitat made from walnut wood and Perspex glass which is a smal scale interpretation of the studio’s 2007 Ideal House pavilion.

Other high bids were received by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands signed dollhouse, an inviting miniature domestic world with stackable rooms designed for children with learning disabilities and sensory impairments, by the Sound [Play]ce, an interactive tower designed for visually impaired children, from HLM Architects and also by The Tower of Fable, a remake of the Balfron Tower, from Fat Architecture studio.

All of these unique dollhouses display at least one element designed specifically as a learning support for children with a disability. Among the most creative design solutions are the House for a Deaf Child by DRMM Architects and the multistory dollhouse from Duggan Morris Architects “designed to aid early intervention strategies for children with developmental disability Autistic Spectrum Disorder.”
